EVENING STROLLS THROUGH HISTORY

Experience history where it happened! Join costumed guides on ninety-minute strolls through Society Hill, a charming 18th century neighborhood, or Historic Philadelphia, the most historic square mile in the United States!

MORE TOURS

HISTORIC PHILADELPHIA

Experience history where it actually happened. No visit to Philadelphia is complete without seeing the sites in the most historic square mile in the United States such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Franklin Court, Carpenters' Hall, the Betsy Ross house, Christ Church, and Elfreth's Alley.

RIVER TO RIVER

William Penn planned "The City of Brotherly Love" between two rivers - the Schuylkill on the west and the Delaware on the east.  Starting at one river and ending at the other, this driving tour offers a panorama of this wonderful city and its neighborhoods.

Take in the sites along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (the Champs Elysees of Philadelphia) then travel through the center of city to see the Comcast Center and City Hall.  Continue your tour along Broad Street (the Avenue of the Arts) as your guide shows you the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.  A drive along Pine Street past Antique Row and Pennsylvania Hospital (the nation's first hospital) will bring you into Society Hill to see a bit of this charming 18th century neighborhood.

By now you have reached the east side of the city where you will find the most historic square mile in the United States.  Learn about the people and events that occurred in such buildings as Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Carpenters' Hall, Franklin Court and Christ Church.

FAIRMOUNT PARK

Few cities in the world can lay claim to the sylvan beauty found on both sides of the Schuylkill River as it runs through Fairmount Park.  Enjoy the splendors of the world's largest landscaped city park such as the Azalea Garden, the "Fountain of the Sea Horses," the Fairmount Water Works and Boathouse Row.  Your guide will also show you several of the restored early-American houses tucked away in the park which were once the summer homes of the city's colonial elite.  Fairmount Park is also home to the Philadelphia Zoo, America's first zoo, and the lovely Shofuso Japanese House and Garden.

VALLEY FORGE

The Encampment at Valley Forge is the epic story of an army's struggle to survive not only the brutal winter of 1777-78 but also its ability to continue as a fighting force.  Your guide will share the living history as you travel through the countryside where General George Washington and his beleaguered Continental Army withdrew after the Battle of Germantown.  Featured sites include the farmhouse that Washington used as his headquarters, soldiers' huts, earthen fortifications, the Memorial Chapel and the Memorial Arch.

CULTURAL CONNECTION

From the 19th century, when Philadelphia was known as the "Athens of America" for its abundance of arts and culture, to today's emerging modern and contemporary art scene, Philadelphia offers an unparalleled array of cultural riches as well as special exhibitions and events.  Choose your tour "palette" from among the world-class museums found along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway; from the performing arts centers and theatres along the Avenue of the Arts; and from the largest collection of outdoor art and murals in the world.

THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE ENDLESS!

SOCIETY HILL

Stroll through this charming neighborhood with its elegantly restored townhouses, hidden gardens and courtyards, and historic Head House Square.  See Trinity houses, carriage steps and "busybodys" as your guide acquaints you with the customs and lifestyles of its 18th century residents.

A tour of one of the restored houses in Society Hill - the Powel House or the Physick House - can be added as well.  The Georgian-style Powel House was once owned by Samuel Powel, Philadelphia's "patriot mayor."  The free standing Federal-style Physick House was once owned by Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the Father of American Surgery.

PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH
(AMISH) COUNTRY

Journey back in time as your travel through
the pastoral countryside of Lancaster County. Your guide will acquaint you with the customs and lifestyles of these quiet people who live without the modern conveniences we take for granted. The day will include a visit to an Amish house and farm along with a real Pennsylvania Dutch style lunch with all the trimmings including Shoo-fly pie.

HISTORIC BUCKS COUNTY

Tucked neatly within Philadelphia's Countryside amidst rolling hillsides, working farms and picturesque old-time towns, Bucks County is a particularly inviting landscape.

See the site where General George Washington and his soldiers crossed the icy Delaware River on Christmas Day 1776 for a  surprise attack on the enemy garrison, turning the tide of war in favor of the Americans.

Visit Green Hill Farms, the country estate of Pearl S. Buck, Pulitzer-prize winning author of "The Good Earth" or Pennsbury Manor, the restored country estate of William Penn situated on the banks of the Delaware River. Enjoy the potpourri of arts and crafts courtesy of Henry C. Mercer, creator of the  Moravian Pottery & tile Works and Fonthill Museum.  View the collection of Pennsylvania Impressionists at the James A. Michener Museum.  And don't overlook the shopping and dining options in Peddlers Village or the quaint community of New Hope.
