OFF THE BEATEN PATH TOURS

If you've already seen the Liberty Bell, then exercise your freedom to explore other options.  You might like...

PHILADELPHIA IN
HIGH STYLE

In the 18th century, Philadelphia's wealthy citizens spared no expense in building, decorating and entertaining.  Perhaps this is why so many of their houses have survived to provide a reflection of the grandeur that existed in colonial Philadelphia.  Step back in time as you explore some of the aspects of the gracious living that marked the 18th century aristocrat.  This will include tours of two of these houses, one in Society Hill and the other

in Fairmount Park.

"FEVER" TOUR

By the end of the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793 over 5,000 people had lost their lives to this devastating illness.  This tour focuses on the experiences of a fictional heroine, Mattie Cook, as she endures tragedy and triumph during this horrendous period in
Philadelphia's history.

"RIGHTS AND WRONGS"

Visit the National Constitution Center, dedicated to celebrating the freedoms we enjoy through the United States Constitution.  Then... visit Eastern State Penitentiary which was dedicated to taking away those freedoms.  Continue with an inspirational walk through the National Liberty Museum, whose mission it is to preserve America's heritage of freedom.

A TASTE OF PHILLY

Philadelphian's take their food traditions very seriously.  Check out some classic Philadelphia fare at the Reading Terminal Market.  Explore this vibrant and historic landmark as you learn the history of the market as well as the stories behind Philly's favorite foods such as cheesesteaks,
soft pretzels, sticky buns, and water ice.

Then it's on to the Italian Market in South Philly, the oldest and largest working
outdoor market in the United States. Still predominately Italian, it offers the best
of many cultures and cuisines.  Some
of the enticing shops include DiBruno Brothers' House of Cheese and Termini Brothers Bakery.

PHASCINATING PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia offers an exciting, interesting, and sometimes, unusual contemporary scene.  Get the inside scoop on what makes Philadelphia so "phascinating"!  Some examples include...

The Dream Garden - designed by artist Maxfield Parrish and executed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, this enormous glass mosaic mural decorates the lobby of the Curtis Publishing Building
Comcast Center - the tallest green building in the country features the world's largest LED screen projecting an ever changing multi-media show with images so realistic you'll think they are jumping off the wall
Philadelphia's Magic Gardens - the work of noted mosaic muralist Isaiah Zagar whose tiled passages weave over- and under-ground for a city block along South Street

PHILADELPHIA IN BLOOM: GARDENS GALORE

Explore the gardens in Independence National Historic Park; enjoy the splendors of Fairmount Park, the world's largest landscaped city park; or travel out to Philadelphia's Countryside to experience such horticultural treasures as
Bartram's Gardens, the Morris Arboretum
and Chanticleer.

THE DISTAFF SIDE: WOMEN OF COLONIAL PHILADELPHIA

What was life like for the women and children who lived in 18th and 19th century Philadelphia?  What was their status in society and what did they do all day?  Did they participate in the war for independence or did they simply stand and watch?  Listen to a properly dressed "woman of the times" as she talks about the "distaff" side of life in Philadelphia.

ALL THAT GLITTERS:
HOLIDAY TOURS

Celebrate the holidays with some of Philadelphia's most cherished traditions such as the historic mansions in Fairmount Park decorated for the holidays by local garden clubs; view the Holiday Spectacular at the Comcast Center; and delight in Macy's Holiday Light Show and the walk-through Dickens Village.  Then take some time to wander through the Christmas Village at LOVE Park, an outdoor holiday market modeled after the traditional Christmas markets in Germany.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE

Philadelphia's African American history is nearly as old as the city itself, for slaves were brought here as early as 1684.  By 1780, however, when Pennsylvania became the first colony to abolish slavery, the city had a large free Black community.  See such sites as...
  • Liberty Bell, taken as a symbol by the abolitionist group, Friends of Freedom
  • Independence Hall
  • The President's House, which served as the first "White House" while Philadelphia was the capital of the United States.  George  Washington and his household lied here along with nine enslaved Africans
  • "Old Pine" Presbyterian Church, which is said to have been a stop along the Underground Railroad
  • Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, founded in 1781 by Richard Allen
